After
returning to San Jose, with a series of 4 good official pre-season
matches behind them, several unofficial practice matches were organized
in
order for Frank Yallop to prepare his team far from the
excitement
caused by the coming season (1).
Last Friday, on the private training facilities of UC
Berkeley, San Jose had to wait the second half to finally
beat the resistant locals. Frank Yallop, who is still having a
close look at the players on trial before deciding who will make the
final cut, probably found interresting
that some of these trial players are showing promising performances.
On
Friday, the line-up for the first half was what he probably considers
as being the first team. In front of less than 50 persons (mostly
students and the very few fans who heard about the match),
despite a clear domination in terms of
possession and a couple of good opportunities, the Quakes didn't manage
to finish one of them and reached the locker room with no tangible
advantage.
It is an almost completely different team (only Joe Cannon
and Ramiro Corrales started the second half after playing the first)
that came back on the nice but narrow CAL training pitch. The
substitutes, most of them not yet confirmed in the roster, proved that
the Coach could rely on them.
They continued the domination and added
efficiency to the performance, providing a convincing 3-0 win to their
side
against a valuable team.
The students'
defense was first unlocked at the 55th minute by Yuri Morales
(strangely wearing a jersey with no number) with his
left foot. Well placed at the far post, he found the net, after a cross
was perfectly delivered by Conrad Smith from the right wing.
Things
then became a little easier for SJ as UC Berkeley, eager to equalize,
adopted a riskier tactic. A a cross from the right wing again, by
Hayden Tinto, that brought the second goal. At the reception of the
cross, Conrad Smith did not miss the opportunity.
Finally,
Morales, crossed a ball from the left to Matt Taylor, who wisely
passed it back to Matt Hatzke, who perfectly finished with his
first
touch from the top of the box.
The Earthquakes will now continue training in the Bay Area until
Wednesday before leaving for Charleston for the Carolina challenge
where
they will play their first three pre-season matches far from
California (See
Schedule)
